About Cricket Malawi
History of Cricket Malawi
2020 marked 100 years of organised cricket in Malawi.
Cricket’s story in Malawi began in 1920 with the formation of the Cricket Club of Nyasaland. In 1964, after Malawi gained independence, this became the Cricket Club of Malawi and later transitioned into Malawi Cricket Union in 2003.
In September 2020, the governing body was rebranded as Cricket Malawi, symbolising a renewed commitment to expanding the game, strengthening development structures, and modernising governance.
For decades, cricket in Malawi was limited to a small group of privileged players. This began to change in 2010 with the establishment of The Cricket Academy (TCA), a movement designed to take cricket into schools and low-income communities and broaden access.
What began as an effort with one team and a single kit has become a nationwide programme that has transformed cricket into a growing, inclusive sport across all regions.
The Cricket Academy (TCA)
The Cricket Academy (TCA) was founded in 2010 to support cricket development in Malawi, with a focus on schools and low-income communities.
Beginning with just one team of 11 players and a single cricket kit, TCA established programmes aimed at introducing cricket to young people who had never previously encountered the sport.
- More than 160 schools now participate in structured programmes.
- Over 13,000 players – boys, girls, men and women – play the game nationwide.
Through community outreach, coaching and competitions, TCA has played a central role in growing cricket and making the sport accessible to all Malawians.
Cricket Malawi & The Cricket Academy
In 2014, Cricket Malawi and The Cricket Academy (TCA) formalised their partnership. TCA now serves as the cricket development wing of the governing body.
Together, they collaborate on:
- Grassroots development in schools and communities.
- High-performance coaching for advanced and emerging players.
- Specialised programmes supporting group and individual player development.
- Educational pathways for coaches, teachers and volunteers.
This partnership ensures that development, talent pathways and governance work together to grow the game sustainably.
